Here it is, the tutorial I’ve been asked about the most: Etyas liquids. I tried to make them as visual as possible, sorry, if it’s a mess for you c:

Every gif is separated by numbers, and an explanations can be found below:

1) Lighting

 - After drawing your contours, think about the location of your main light.I’ll also add for myself some back light, like… Candle or something. Yeah.

 - Your main light will track down the surface of your liquid string from the side it is shining.
 - Liquid itself will distort this light to the sides.
 - Same goes to the backlight, just in a smaller amount~

- It doesn’t need to be picture perfect. Liquids tend to be chaotic in structure.

2) Cover lighting

 - Liquids are not just strings and tubes that hang everywhere. They can cover stuff too! With the following effects…

 - Here’s our basic test tube. It has it’s own shine coefficient, but when we pour some liquid over - It implifies shining effect of the weird test tube, folowing the rules from the previous gif
 - It also will make coloration of the tube a bit darker… I’m sure you’re familiar with multiplying layer effect.

3) Distorion

 - When the liquid crosses something, it will distort it, mixing colors with the background.
 - I prefer to draw that effect above every layer in the pic, copying colors around

4) Colors and opacity

 - By adjasting colors, opasity and lighting strength, we can manipulate our drawing to appear like other liquids.
There is nothing to show off here - you should try it yourself!

5) Viscosity

 -  Don’t forget about the viscosity of liquids. They can behave differently depending on their type.

6 - 7) Little tips

Drawing liquid covering an object without contours

- Apply your liquid via Multiplier layer effect or Screen effect with the gradient tool or airbrush.
- Make holes in it wherever you want
- Draw your lighting over it, avoiding the holes and bending the light around them a little
- Erase the light where your gradient ends
- Draw light around the borders of the liquid

Drawing puddles

- Draw basic shape vith Multiplyier or Screen effect, blur at some points, maybe add holes.
- Puddles tend to reflect large amount of visible lighting, and less in the shadows
- Draw your lighting, bluring it on the blured sections and bending aroud crisp borders

Something like that. Hope it’s fine.

You were lying on your bed, staring at the phone on your bedside table, and willing it to ring. Brian was late for your nightly phone call, a little tradition you had picked up since he started touring a couple months ago. You were just about to call it a night, when the phone rang.

You lunged for it, almost falling off of the bed in your haste to answer it. “Hello,” you said, rather breathlessly.

“Hi,” Brian chuckled. “Alright, love?”

“I am now,” you said, lying back on the bed. “You’re late, I was just about to go to bed.”

He sighed, you couldn’t see him, but you know he was running his hand through his hair. “I know, I’m sorry. The show went on a bit longer than planned, because Roger was showing off-”

“I’m sure you weren’t showing off at all.”

“Course not love.” You could hear the smile in his voice. “But then we had this ridiculously long after party, and now here I am rambling on at—oh Christ, it’s four in the morning.”
